Corporate Entertainment Interview – Broadway’s Michelle Blakely

Michelle Blakely is an incomparable actress who has worked on Broadway alongside Bernadette Peters and Rosie O’Donnell. An alum of many of our corporate events, we caught up with her to reflect on her life on Broadway.

HOB: You were fantastic in Annie Get Your Gun. What was it like performing in such a beloved musical opposite Bernadette Peters?

MB: Bernadette has always been one of my idols. In one of our scenes, she got the giggles after flubbing a line. Some of the cast started to “break scene” and laugh with her. I was stone-faced and the last hold out until I couldn’t stand it anymore and joined in. At this point, the audience applauded wildly and cackled with joy. It was truly an authentic Broadway moment.

HOB: How funny! Do you like getting such a big response from the audience, or is it distracting sometimes when people are singing or clapping along with your song?

MB: Those personal interactions with the audience are the most gratifying part of performing. Whether attendees are a group of scientists, bankers, real estate agents, or doctors, those audience interaction moments are pure energy. You feed off the audience and, in turn, they feed off of you. When you have that synergy, it’s very powerful. It’s definitely an experience that you won’t get at a movie theatre or watching TV!

HOB: Speaking of movies and TV, how do you feel audiences respond to live entertainment, when filmed performances seem to be more prevalent?

MB: At the reception after our recent event for Citi, I met a man who had never seen a Broadway show. He said that he was aware that there would be entertainment throughout the evening, but he was surprised at how engaged he became during the performance. He was thoroughly amazed by the talented singers and dancers, and ended up singing along and bopping to the beat!

HOB: Have you ever had an experience like that with an entire audience?

MB: One of the groups that really stands out in my mind was a Bayer corporate audience in Colorado Springs, many of whom were from Germany. Before going to Colorado, I was concerned that our show may not translate. But the audience was one of the most appreciative and vocal audiences I have ever experienced with a corporate event. After the finale, the CEO made an impromptu speech about our wonderful performance and how the magic of Broadway had influenced his life. It was a very moving night for us all.

HOB: Sounds like a fantastic evening. What are some of your favorite Broadway shows?

MB: There are so many memories I have of brilliant performances that I’ve seen on Broadway. Jennifer Holliday bringing down the house during a matinee of Dreamgirls, Lilly Tomlin single-handedly mesmerizing the audience with her one-woman show, The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life… Even recently watching Fantasia’s star turn in The Color Purple. I’m constantly inspired and reminded why I was drawn to the live theatre.

HOB: One last question, what song from Broadway do you feel a personal connection to?

MB: The song “Something’s Coming” from West Side Story is very special to me. It’s about how you never know what the future can hold, and what wonderful thing is waiting for you around the corner. I feel it encapsulates the entertainment business, as well as the human experience. The power of the unknown future gives you hope for a better tomorrow.

Single Teenage Parenting – Tackling of Children Emotions as Single Parent

Each child is unique and responds in a different manner in different situations. Single parenting deeply effects their emotions, so it is the duty of all parents to act in a way, which is better for the future of our kids. The idea is to act and not to react. So lets find out how the life of our off springs is affected by our actions.

Being a parent we should be well conversant with the stress triggers of our offsprings as they vary with age and personality. Every child responds to a situation in its own way. One kid may take a situation very seriously whereas the other may not react at all. Similarly toddlers, adolescents and younger kids face stress triggers differently. Single parents can only help themselves and their children if they know their way well.

Teenagers have complex requirements, which are not easy to meet as a sole parent. Being the only parent you lack the support of your partner. In absence of mothers all girls find their dads inexperienced to deal with their day-to-day problems. Single dads are often blamed for being insensitive, by teenage girls particularly on dating issues. Being a single father you have to make them understand that when you ask to invite her boyfriend home before going out together, itis obviously not an intrusion in her life. Rather it is to know whether it is safe for her going out with that particular person or not. This happens because that dad knows about teenage boys as he was a boy himself once and all dads whether single or not must look after the safety of their daughters. Every now and then curfew becomes an issue but they are to be explained that these check and balances depend upon how dependable she is.

Similarly the relation between teenage sons and their single mums is not without problems. This relation and emotions are at full swing in this relationship. As the boys grow up they usually become taller than their mothers because of the testosterone surge at this age. At the age of 16 boys may be up to 6 ft tall whereas most moms are not. As this happens the boys try to take charge within the house defying their mothers as parent. At this point the mothers need to be determined to keep their dominant rule and exercise their authority. If you are firm you can dictateand command the boys to follow rules. They need to remain in their rooms if they cannot control themselves till the time they are normal again. Similarly it is not advisable and safe for your teenager to drive in an angry mood, this may prove harmful.

When you deal with your child’s emotions as the only parent it may be very tiring but to keep you household peaceful and smooth running you have to explain to your children that it is YOU who is in charge and emotions are part of everyday life but that they have to keep them under control.

I’m so scared?

I have never travelled anywhere on my own before in my life.Not even on the bus. In fact I’ve hardly ever been on public transport before.I’ve recently started Uni in Liverpool and my bf has moved to London at the same time.I live 3 miles from the Liverpool city centre and am in walking distance of a small train station that has trains going to the centre every 5 minutes.
Anyway,my bf wants me to meet him in London on Friday evening at about 7ish and return Sunday afternoon but I’m terrified as I’ve never done any journey before and might end up in the middle of nowhere.I don’t even know what to say to the ticket man to purchase my tickets!I’m so scared but I really want to go to London.What can I do? None of my friends will come with me. My bf says I have to get the train to Liverpool centre and then it’s just one train all the way from London Euston but I’m so scared.I don’t even know how much a single will cost!

A few words of encouragement. Firstly you were able to share your fears with tens of thousands of people via this site.
Secondly if you go to your local station they almost certainly should be able to offer you information regarding the cheapest way to travel to London (Euston) I think the slogan ”let the train take the strain” is an apt one.
I often travel from Scotland to London by train, and in the main it’s not too bad, and i find that what works better than anything else, is if your in doubt it’s intelligent to ask, as you may need to change several times before making your destination. Fundamentally, remember your objective, which is to meet your partner. For me that would be all the incentive i need.

New Films Break the stereotypes of black men

For decades, Hollywood has represented African-American men in a negative light. The pimps and traffickers drugs to the thugs and womanizing, the representation of blacks in the media have led to numerous stereotypes that ultimately determines the amount view an entire group of people.

Moreover, stereotypical representations of Black men, have even led young African-Americans to be American in a negative light as well. For many young African Americans, the negative stereotypes perpetuated by the media, only reinforces the negative view of them, because the black man who meet a lot about a negative stereotype.

On seeing black men as drug dealers and deadbeat fathers leads some to believe that black men are not real, unless they live a life of negativity. The representation of African-American men in films like Waiting to Exhale and Diary of a Mad Black has led many to believe that Black women are no good Black men around, and that good people are the reason for the crisis that sometimes exist in relations Black.

However, two upcoming movies, The Pursuit of Happyness, starring Will Smith and son Jaden, and Diary of a tired man by the time the first black filmmaker Tim Alexander attempt to change stereotypes by presenting black men from the point of view of a brother.

Will Smith's role in Remembrance of happiness is based on the true story of Chris Gardner, a single parent who transformed his life homeless billionaire.

Raised by a single mother, met Gardner at an early age, wanted to be a constant presence in the life of your child. Even if he did not have much property and wealth, his mother, Bettye Jean Gardner, preached to his children who may someday be a millionaire.

After a stint in the military, Gardner went to San Francisco to pursue a career as a seller of supplies physicians. Just enough to keep his girlfriend and his son, Gardner's life changed dramatically when he met a runner to drive a Ferrari won Stocker $ 80,000 a month.

Influenced by his conversation with the broker, it was his job to pursue a career on Wall Street. Despite being a high school dropout, convinced a company to give it a try, but not trained.

Unfortunately, when he reached his first day at work, he realized the man who had hired no longer worked there and his chance had gone with him.

Gardener was able to get a job with an agent of change, but could not live in his guest house, since it does not allow children, so they found themselves without a roof over their head.

Sleeping in places such as parks public with his young son in the back, Gardner remembered the lessons taught by his mother, and a lot of prayer and dedication, Gardner was finally able to take your child in public parks in the attic.

The first feature film by Tim Alexander, The Diary of a Tired Black Man began as a three-minute clip, is simply to show young black actors worked with.

Frustrated by failed relationships, involving what he calls "sisters angry," Alexander has attempted to write a little script that would answer black man movie recent attacks on men.

Although Alexander clip generated much controversy in the African-American community, said his film does not focus women in all black, but only those who bring anger from previous relationships in new situations, and possibly lead to men from afar.

The filmmaker believes that many of the issues black women have with their male counterparts directly reflects the life of hearing negative stereotypes about black men. Whether listen to their mothers or the media, many African American women have preconceived notions of black men, and when they finally meet a good black, they think about something wrong with them because they are not accustomed to positive relationships between black men and women.

Unfortunately, many have used for infidelity and have witnessed violence from their mothers and their families suffer at the hands of black men, and when there is no drama in your relationship, try to invent, which leads many Black men looking for love elsewhere.
